Emotional Awareness

Naming Feelings

About This Lesson

Before we can manage our emotions, we must be able to name them accurately. Research shows that the simple act of labeling an emotion — putting a precise word to what we feel — reduces its intensity and gives us more agency over how we respond. This lesson introduces the emotional vocabulary that forms the foundation of self-awareness.

Key Concepts

01

Emotional granularity — distinguishing between similar feelings like anxious, overwhelmed, and apprehensive — leads to more precise and effective responses

02

Labeling an emotion activates the rational brain and reduces its emotional charge

03

Physical sensations such as a tight chest or restless energy are reliable signals of underlying emotions

04

Expanding your emotional vocabulary expands your ability to communicate what you need from others

Reflection

Time to Reflect

At the end of today, pause and name three emotions you experienced. Were any of them difficult to label precisely? What physical sensations were present? What triggered each one?
